Migishi Atelier is a wooden modernist building designed by Iwao Yamawaki, who studied at Bauhaus. In 1934, Yamawaki designed this building for Kotaro and Setsuko Migishi, the painters.

Initially, the building did not have a straight entry from the entrance but had a unique approach that took a detour along the large glass facade. However, the entrance room had been sealed off due to age and decay, and the vestibule had become a storage area. To revive this approach, we revitalized the windows of the entrance, restored the walls, and thoroughly cleaned up the exterior.

A century has passed, and the environment around this building has completely changed. The wooded area had become a residential area, and the fence was now near the windows installed at the entrance. Therefore, we designed the original form windows and added rotatable contrivance to improve ventilation and, simultaneously, reflect the plantings in the flowerbed outside. The "restoration" here is based on research but with some fiction mixed in as the situation changes.

中野区鷺宮に建つ「三岸アトリエ」は、バウハウスで学んだ山脇巌が画家・三岸好太郎と三岸節子のために設計し、1934年に竣工した木造モダニズム建築。直方体を組み合わせた平明な外観の南東面に、二層分の高さの全面ガラス窓と鉄骨の螺旋階段が設けられ、竣工当時はかやぶき屋根の農家や周囲に広がる田畑に眺望がひらけていた。好太郎はその竣工を見ずに亡くなるが、以後妻の三岸節子が住居兼アトリエとして使用し、現在は撮影スタジオとして利用されている。

もともとこの建物は敷地入口からストレートに建物に入らず、前庭を回り、当時としては驚異的なファサードの大ガラスを肩でかすめつつ遠回りするような特殊なアプローチを採っていた。しかし、老朽化と腐敗によって玄関室が封鎖されてしまい、前庭は物置のようになってしまっていた。このアプローチを復活させるため、その手段として窓の再生や壁の修復、そして徹底的な外構の清掃をした。

とはいえ、すっかり環境は変わってしまっている。雑木林が広がっていた周囲は住宅街になり、塀が玄関に設けられた窓の間近に迫っていた。そこで、窓は、風通しを良くするため回転して開き、同時に外部花壇の植栽を映し込むように設計した。まず過去の写真から窓の寸法を想定し、建築家が残した文章から当時の壁や窓枠の色を想定した。ここでは、リサーチに基づく修復をベースにしつつも、状況の変化を鑑みることで少しずつフィクションが混入するような仕方での「復元」をおこなっている。
