In-Between

The Exhibition of the Japan Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Curated by architect Jun Aoki, with a curatorial team including advisor Tamayo Iemura (Professor, Tama Art University), the exhibition featured two units: SUNAKI (architect Toshikatsu Kiuchi and artist/programmer Taichi Sunayama) and Asako Fujikura + Takahiro Ohmura.

The theme, “IN-BETWEEN,” examines the responses that arise in the ma (in-between time/space) between binaries such as human/non-human and natural/artificial, without merely integrating them. It envisions the possibility of a third intelligence that does not presuppose the separation of subject and object, using the pavilion building itself as the site of inquiry. SUNAKI was responsible for the pilotis, while Fujikura and Ohmura created a video installation for the gallery.

What Fujikura and Ohmura attempted in Venice was a “fictional renovation” of the Japan Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia. This was not a physical intervention, but rather a reconfiguration of the human perception of architecture among the people drawn into a “dialogue” arising between the pavilion’s constituent elements—Hole, Wall Columns, Outer Walls, Pensilina, Brick Terrace, Tilted Loop Path, and Yew Tree—that were imagined as possessing their own viewpoints.

Inside the exhibition room, where the “voices” of humans and non-humans intersect, two large screens are installed. One displays the Human Video, live-action footage of five humans sharing a meal. The other displays the Construction Video, a 3DCG work that builds a fictional landscape using the spoken words of the dialogue as material. In the foreground, two monitors are arm-mounted to the wall columns: one for subtitles, and the other for the Object Video, displaying the object currently speaking. At times, it appears as though humans and non-humans are exchanging words. These videos, audio, and dialogue are synchronized in approximately 17-minute cycles, emerging together as a single event.
