Construction Video

Video, 2025

  • One of the video works comprising the video installation presented by Asako Fujikura and Takahiro Ohmura in the Japan Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, IN-BETWEEN.

Construction Video translates the words spoken in the Object/Human dialogues into visual and sonic elements—color, composition, form, movement, scale, speed, depth, and sound—gradually constructing a fictional landscape. Here, “translation” does not mean a direct correspondence in which meaning is faithfully converted into visual imagery. Rather, it sets in motion a process of associative leaps, where puns, wordplay, and even contradictions intervene. The work offers neither closure nor resolution; viewers will repeatedly fail to converge meaning onto a single point. Yet the screen remains filled with rich colors and depth, allowing the viewer to keep watching even without grasping its meaning.

In this work, dialogue is not aimed at the straightforward transmission of meaning. For instance, when the Pensilina says, “…into that orange, spiky thing, that awaits with outstretched arms… That thing, I fear that thing!”, the audience cannot take these words at face value. Rather, they are prompted to imagine a perceptual structure other than the human, and to listen as if the voice were issued from an unfamiliar body. Construction Video is designed precisely for this: to have the audience envision the speaker’s perception—its bodily composition and its embeddedness within an environment. This becomes the core around which the possibility of dialogue arises on the side of the viewer. Such a structure is not limited to the special case of human–nonhuman encounters, but is present in all dialogue.
