What living beings possess—and artificial intelligence does not—is a body and the irreversible flow of time. Eating encapsulates both: with each bite, the contents of the plate diminish; what has been eaten can never be restored. From this premise, Human Video depicts five individuals gathered around a dining table. Maintaining a subtly awkward distance, the participants—diverse in age and gender yet clearly not a family—represent not specific persons but a cross-section of what might be called “the human.”

In developing the dialogue, Fujikura and I first built detailed profiles for each participant—not only age and gender, but also place of origin, personal history, political stance, eating habits, rhythm of silences, and even the direction of their gaze toward a neighbor. Rather than casting actors to play these roles, we sought “real people” whose own identities closely aligned with the fictional profiles. The goal was to find individuals who would not need to act, who could retain their own agency while naturally reconciling themselves with the imagined persona.

Our guiding principle was that they would eat “as themselves” before the camera. Yet for those without professional acting experience, being surrounded by cameras, lighting, and microphones while delivering prescribed lines was, by nature, an unnatural circumstance. Untrained in reproducing directed movements, they instead revealed to the camera the tremor of an eye muscle or the stiffness of a joint. The work is neither documentary nor fiction, but a deliberately constructed in-between space. Speech is not acting, yet the body remains tense—this subtle condition, the “congealed body,” forms the work’s central motif.

The meal was created by food designer KAORU, whose dishes evoke a mysterious quality in which the familiar and the unfamiliar mingle seamlessly—“Japanese, yet neither of the present nor the past.” Costumes were developed in collaboration with the fashion brand kolor (designer: Junichi Abe), known for inventive juxtapositions of materials and architectural silhouettes. Each piece stands out individually, yet together they form a strangely unified whole.

生命にあって人工知能にないもの、それは身体と不可逆な時間の流れだと考えた。食事はその両方を端的に示す。ひと口ごとに皿の中身が減る。食べたものはもとには戻らない。こうした認識のもと制作した《Human Video》は、5人の男女が食卓を囲む映像だ。どこかぎこちない距離感のままひとつの卓を囲む出演者らは年齢も性別も異なるが家族には見えず、特定の個人というよりも、〈人間〉という存在のある断面を提示している。

私と藤倉は対話の執筆において、登場人物の年齢や性別はもちろん、出身地や経歴、政治的な立場、食事の際の癖や沈黙の間合い、隣人へのまなざしの方向に至るまで、それぞれの人物像を詳細に立ち上げた。その上で、そのキャラクターを演じてもらうのではなく、「脚本の人物像に近い実在の人物」を現実世界から探し出す、というキャスティングの方針を立てた。求めたのは「演技をせずに済む人」であり、自分自身の主体性を保ちながら、架空の人物像と無理なく擦り合わせることのできる人だった。

あくまで自分自身としてカメラの前で食事をしてもらう、というのが基本方針。とはいえ、演技のプロではない彼らにとって、カメラ・照明・音響に囲まれて所定の台詞を発話することは明らかに異常な状況だ。指示された動きを再現する訓練を積んでいるわけでもない。しかしだからこそ、カメラは眼球の震えやぎこちない関節の動きを捉える。ドキュメンタリーでもフィクションでもなく、その中間を構造的に作り出すこと。発言は演技ではないが身体は常に緊張している、という微妙なニュアンスによってもたらされる「硬直する身体」こそが、この映像の中核的題材である。

食事はフードデザイナーのKAORU氏が担当している。「日本的でありながら、現在でも過去でもない」という、既知と未知が滑らかに混在するような不可思議な質感が見る者を捉える。衣装は、独創的な素材の切り替えと構築性で知られるファッションブランドkolor（デザイナー・阿部潤一氏）の協力により、個別に見ると際立っているにもかかわらず、全体としては統一感をもつというスタイリングが実現されている。
