It is the venue design for an exhibition jointly organized by the Architectural Institute of Japan and the Finnish Institute in Japan commemorating the 120th anniversary of Alvar Aalto's birth. Based on the exhibition's themes of "reflection" and "reading," we dispersed the shows to create an environment where the viewer could establish a one-on-one relationship.

Cross-sectional models, the main exhibit in this exhibition, have a unique character in that one viewer's body is forced to interfere with the view of another. From the above perspective, however, this is a relatively favorable condition. Our problem was to create an atmosphere that would allow people to sit in front of the models for long periods as if it were a matter of course. To this end, we adjusted the exhibits' size, color, and distance (photographs, drawings, texts, etc.) so that visitors would be encouraged to be in specific positions even when viewing any displays.

The ten exhibition tables with a 950mm top height encourage a seated position for viewing the cross-sectional models and bisect the exhibition room into upper and lower. Above the top is a messy space with exhibits scattered about, while below the top panel is a space of neutral forms of the tables, Stool 60, and a glossy marble floor. This division between top and bottom holds the nearly confusing world together, bringing a quiet wholeness to the exhibition.

アルヴァ・アアルト生誕120周年を記念し、日本建築学会とフィンランドセンターの共同主催で開催された展覧会の会場設計。「内省」と「読書」という本展のテーマを踏まえ、展示空間をできる限り広く使いながら各展示物の鑑賞位置を独立・分散させ、鑑賞者が展示物と一対一の関係を取り結ぶことのできる環境を設えた。

本展の主たる展示物である断面模型は、ある鑑賞者の身体が他者の鑑賞を妨害せざるをえない、という少々特殊な性格をもっている。が、上記の視座に立てばこれはむしろ好都合な与条件となる。問題は、模型の前に長時間いすわることを許容する会場の雰囲気をつくることだ。そのために、断面模型以外の展示物（写真、図面、テキスト等）の鑑賞においても特定の体勢・位置での鑑賞が促されるようにサイズや色、距離関係を調整した。ある人物、ある展示物、ある場所がつくるひとつの個別具体的な「ここ」からの眺めのセット──鑑賞者と展示物の局所的な関係性のもつれ──のレイアウトの調整により、展示室内の鑑賞者の位置、 体勢、首の角度、動線、移動の速さ、等々は散り散りになっていく。

950mmという天板高さで作られた10台の展示什器は、座って模型を眺める体勢を促すとともに、展示室を上下に二分する。天板の上は展示物が散らばる雑多な空間であり、天板の下は展示什器の中立的な形態と点在するスツール60、そして光沢のある大理石の床が広がる空間だ。バラバラになりかけた世界は、この上下の分割によって繋ぎ止められ、展覧会には静かな全体性がもたらされる。
