Venue design for photographer Yurika Kono's solo exhibition "REGARDING THE ECHO OF OTHERS." Kono has conducted research and photography on the simulated atomic bomb drop site in her hometown of Nagaoka for years. This exhibition features photographs of the overgrown vegetation and agricultural activities at the present drop site, pinhole camera works, video pieces capturing the Nagaoka Festival grand fireworks show, and the documented daily life of Kono's grandfather. In the exhibition room, field recording works by musician Tetsu Umehara overlap these exhibits.

Kono's calm gaze seeks to capture the potentially extraordinary "something" within everyday landscapes—that may have existed in the past, could have existed, or may exist in the future. What the camera records is nothing other than the existence of "other," which is only made conscious and aware through skepticism of what is visible. Through the careful operation of laying out a subtle residue of subjectivity, a place of possibility emerges where "I" (or "now") and "you" (or "past") are temporarily or provisionally replaced. Behind this attempt lies a steadfast determination not to give up on understanding while accepting the impossibility of being a party to the situation.

In response to Kono's practice, the venue design aimed to utilize the exhibition room as extensively as possible while supporting the arrangement of photographs, videos, and sound with minimal necessary elements. The partially open picture frames are designed to encourage careful viewing of each photograph while facilitating the horizontal movement of the viewer's eye while arranging the photographs as continuously and equivalently as possible. The center of these frames was aligned at 1400mm, a slightly lower position than usual. Since this is the height of the camera when Kono set up her tripod, and at the same time, it is the exact center of the exhibition wall, it was judged to be this dimension that could express the attitude of the exhibition as a whole. The bar placed at the entrance, hovering at 1400mm above the ground, serves not only to emphasize this height but also acts as a signboard displaying the exhibition title and furniture guiding the flow of movement within the room.

This emphasis on this height saves the amount of information in the entire exhibition by clearly dividing the room into upper and lower sections while subtly introducing a slight sense of discomfort to the viewing stance. This hints at the undeniable corporeality of the photographer behind the images (the personal atmosphere created by the texture of the clear-painted tamo wood also adds to that effect). As viewers observe the photographs and videos, it always occurs intervention of Umehara's sound, causing a overlap of passive perception where the ears pick up and conjunction images with the body's movement.

写真家・高野ユリカの個展「REGARDING THE ECHO OF OTHERS」の会場構成および什器制作。高野は出身地・長岡の模擬原子爆弾投下跡地を対象に、長期間のリサーチと撮影をおこなってきた。本展では、植物が生い茂り、畑仕事が営まれる現在の投下跡地の写真群、長岡花火を撮影したピンホールカメラ作品・映像作品、そして高野の祖父の日常の肌理を記録した作品に、音楽家・梅原徹のフィールドレコーディングによる音響作品が重ねられる。

高野の冷静な凝視は、日常の何気ない風景のなかに潜性している──過去にあった／ありえたかもしれない／これからあるかもしれない──非日常的な「なにか」を捉えようとする。カメラが記録するのは、見えているものへの違和を通してはじめて意識・自覚される他者の存在にほかならない。冷静な眼差しのなかにわずかに残存する私性、そのレイアウトという慎重なオペレーションを通して、「わたし」（あるは「いま」）と「あなた」（あるいは「過去」）を、一時的であれ、仮設的であれ、入れ替える可能性の場が立ち上がる。この試みの背景にあるのは、当事者たりえないことを受け止めながら、理解することを諦めないという確固たる意思である。

高野の実践に呼応するため、できるだけ展示室を広く使いながら、必要最小限の要素によって写真・映像・音の配置をサポートし、会場を構成した。半分開いたようなかたちの額縁は、写真群をできるだけ連続的に、等価に配置しつつ、それらをひとつひとつ慎重に見る態勢を促しながら、視線を水平に移動させるために考案・制作された。この額縁のセンターは通常とは若干低い位置である1400mmに揃えている。この高さは高野が三脚を立てる際のカメラの高さであり、同時に展示壁のちょうど中心でもあったので、本展全体の態度を表明しうる寸法だと判断した。展示室入り口に配置される「水平な棒」は地上1400mで浮かび、端的にこの高さ（眼＝カメラの位置）を提示・強調するものだが、同時に展示タイトルを示す看板であり、動線の流れを誘導する什器でもある。

この寸法の強調により、室を明快に上下分割することで展示全体の情報量を節約しつつ、観賞態勢に若干の違和を与えることで諸イメージの背後にある消去し得ない撮影者の身体性を暗示している（クリア塗装のタモの質感がもたらす私的な雰囲気はその効果を高めている）。写真や映像の観賞位置には梅原による音響が介入し、身体の移動にともなうイメージの継起に、耳が音を拾い集める受動的な知覚が常にオーバーラップする。こうした会場構成の方針はおしなべて、観賞の能動性を自覚する（「わたくしごととして見る」）ことの手がかりとなることを目指している。
