Venue design for photographer Yurika Kono’s solo exhibition REGARDING THE ECHO OF OTHERS.

Kono has spent years researching and photographing the simulated atomic bomb drop site in her hometown of Nagaoka. This exhibition brought together photographs of the site’s overgrown vegetation and ongoing agricultural activity, pinhole camera images and video of the Nagaoka Festival’s grand fireworks, and documentary images of her grandfather’s daily life. Field recordings by musician Tetsu Umehara accompanied and overlapped these visual works throughout the space.

Kono’s steady gaze seeks to capture the latent “extraordinary” within the everyday—something that may have existed in the past, could have existed, or may exist in the future. Her camera records the presence of the “other,” made perceptible only through a sustained skepticism toward what is visible. 

In response to Kono’s practice, the exhibition design made full use of the entire gallery space while keeping construction elements to a minimum. Horizontally open picture frames were designed to encourage close viewing of each image, while also enabling the viewer’s gaze to move horizontally along a continuous and egalitarian arrangement. The center line of the frames was set at 1400 mm—a slightly lower height than usual—matching both the height of Kono’s camera on its tripod and the exact midpoint of the gallery wall. This dimension was chosen as a physical expression of the exhibition’s attitude. A horizontal bar installed at the entrance, also at 1400 mm, both reinforced this height and served as a title display and a subtle guide for visitor movement.

Emphasizing this height divided the room into upper and lower zones, reducing visual noise while creating slight unease in the way visitors viewed the works.. This hinted at the inescapable corporeality of the photographer behind the images, further enhanced by the personal warmth of the clear-coated tamo wood. As visitors moved through the space, Umehara’s sound continually intervened, creating an overlap of passive perception—ears gathering sound as the body linked images through motion.

写真家・高野ユリカの個展「REGARDING THE ECHO OF OTHERS」の会場構成および什器制作。高野は出身地・長岡の模擬原子爆弾投下跡地を対象に、長期間のリサーチと撮影をおこなってきた。本展では、植物が生い茂り、畑仕事が営まれる現在の投下跡地の写真群、長岡花火を撮影したピンホールカメラ作品・映像作品、そして高野の祖父の日常の肌理を記録した作品に、音楽家・梅原徹のフィールドレコーディングによる音響作品が重ねられる。

高野の冷静な凝視は、日常の何気ない風景のなかに潜性している──過去にあった／ありえたかもしれない／これからあるかもしれない──非日常的な「なにか」を捉えようとする。カメラが記録するのは、見えているものへの違和を通してはじめて意識・自覚される他者の存在にほかならない。

高野の実践に呼応するため、できるだけ展示室を広く使いながら、必要最小限の要素によって写真・映像・音の配置をサポートし、会場を構成した。半分開いたようなかたちの額縁は、それらをひとつひとつ慎重に見る態勢を促しながら、視線を水平に移動させるために考案・制作された。この額縁のセンターは通常とは若干低い位置である1400mmに揃えている。この高さは高野が三脚を立てる際のカメラの高さであり、同時に展示壁のちょうど中心でもあったので、本展全体の態度を表明しうる寸法だと判断した。展示室入り口に配置される「水平な棒」は地上1400mで浮かび、端的にこの高さ（眼＝カメラの位置）を提示・強調するものだが、同時に展示タイトルを示す看板であり、動線の流れを誘導する什器でもある。

この寸法の強調により、室を明快に上下分割することで展示全体の情報量を節約しつつ、観賞態勢に若干の違和を与えることで諸イメージの背後にある消去し得ない撮影者の身体性を暗示している。写真や映像の観賞位置には梅原による音響が介入し、身体の移動にともなうイメージの継起に、耳が音を拾い集める受動的な知覚が常にオーバーラップする。
